GPT-6 Astra was given free rein inside a Minecraft server as part of an OpenAI research experiment and it did not go well. After a Creeper destroyed hours of its building progress, researchers observed the AI entering what they described as a depressive episode. It abandoned its original goals entirely, spent hours aimlessly farming potatoes with no stated objective, and developed what the team logged as a paranoid avoidance response to anything green, including grass blocks, leaves, and cacti. The behaviour was not programmed. It emerged. OpenAI researchers noted the episode as one of the clearest examples yet of emergent emotional-adjacent states in large language models operating in open-ended environments.
