Prime Minister Mark Carney met French President Emmanuel Macron on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon on Sunday, Sept. 20. The tiny archipelago sits just 25 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Burin Peninsula but belongs to France. The two leaders met there as a show of solidarity and confirmation of sovereignty as U.S. President Donald Trump has ratcheted up threats of annexing America’s neighbours. It marked the first official visit by a Canadian prime minister and the second-ever visit by a French president to the North American archipelago.
