I love Halloween, but what I’m always chasing is less of a specific aesthetic and more of that cozy Halloween feeling I remember from growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. For me, it’s colorful paper Beistle decorations, orange string lights, glowing blow molds, one really good light-up pumpkin, and warm amber lighting instead of harsh little LED lights. I also love Halloween decorations that feel handmade and collected over time. I keep the things my kids and I make, and I thrift other people’s old hand-painted, hand-sewn, slightly imperfect Halloween decorations too. The weirder and more personal, the better. And honestly, some of the nostalgia comes from things that aren’t decor at all. Buy the Halloween Oreos, candy corn, Pillsbury cookies, seasonal cereal and ridiculous shaped pasta. Pull out Halloween coloring books and puzzles on an ordinary school night. Put on old episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, So Weird, or the Halloween TV specials you remember instead of only watching the same classic Halloween movies. You don’t have to perfectly recreate Halloween in 1999. I think it’s more fun to remember the little things that made it feel magical and bring those feelings into the life you’re living now. 🎃🍂
