When we relocated, we were convinced we didn’t want to build again. But as we searched for a home with the old-world charm and character we loved, we realized we might have to create it ourselves. So when we ultimately decided to build, we knew we didn’t want the finished home to feel cookie-cutter. Giving it a clear point of view became one of our biggest priorities. For us, that meant incorporating arches, picture-frame molding, built-in bookcases, custom cabinetry, natural stone, warm wood tones, statement tile, lighting that feels collected rather than expected, and softer architectural curves—like our rounded kitchen island. Repeating those materials and details throughout the house gave it the depth, warmth and traditional personality we envisioned. And while some of these choices were made during the building process, so many can be added over time to bring more character to an existing home, too.
