The amount of calls I've done in my lifetime for people that owe the IRS back taxes and who have paid thousands of dollars to do some basic work like put them on an installment agreement is wild. I'm sorry, but as somebody who's been a tax lawyer for, I don't know, 11 years, there is nothing that the government does fast, easy, or simple. You want an offer and compromise? You're talking 12 months, minimum. Maybe 18 months. They have to get back to you by 24 months. But there's nothing fast about it. Resolving a tax problem doesn't have to be that hard or that complicated. After hearing so many people be exploited, um, using fear and these sales people that don't even know tax law and can't offer tax legal or bankruptcy advice, exploited out of thousands of dollars to do basic things that the government built these programs for people to do themselves, but the government's difficult to deal with.
