I spent so much of my childhood wishing my hair was straight. Growing up mixed Filipino, curly hair wasn’t the Filipino beauty standard I saw celebrated. So watching H.E.R. do the Forgotten Island press run with a head full of big, beautiful curls got me a little emotional. Little Filipino kids are going to fall in love with these characters, then see the real actors behind them. And somewhere, a little girl with big curly hair is going to see H.E.R. and realize that Filipina beauty can look like her too. Maybe if I had seen more of that growing up, I would’ve spent less time trying to make my hair look like everyone else’s. Take up space. Let your hair do it too. #forgottenisland
