I was a bartender in Brooklyn for five years and I spent a lot of that time dialing in my perfect old fashioned recipe to be one, delicious and two, easily replicable at home so, unfussy. And I have never made this old fashioned for somebody who likes old fashioneds who didn't love this one, so I figured I'd share it. And again we're keeping it simple so we're building it right in the glass. What we're not gonna be doing is muddling fruit in here because we're not at a hotel bar in 1987. We're gonna start with a big ice cube. A big one's nice because it melts more slowly so it doesn't dilute it as quickly but if you only have small ice cubes, use what you got. I'm sure it'll be fine. This recipe was designed to be used with any bourbon and as such, we're gonna use Jim Beam because they sell it in a 1.75 liter at Costco and it works perfectly fine. Save your fancy bourbon for your neat pours, your rocks pours. I'm sure people will be mad but we're mixing this with sugar so this works great. Speaking of which, the next ingredient, simple syrup. You could make this at home, it's equal parts sugar and boiling water, but unfussy is the key so we're using store bought. The one aspect I get a little bit picky about personally is the bitters. We have two kinds. One, your classic Angostura aromatic bitters. These make all the difference. And two, Regan's orange bitters. There's lots of different orange bitters on the market. I find that these are the best but use what you have. So we're just building it and then stirring it in the glass. We start with half an ounce of simple syrup over the ice. And then we go in with the bitters. Eight dashes of Angostura and four dashes of orange bitters. And then we go in with four ounces of bourbon. This is technically a double, so feel free to cut the whole recipe in half if you're lame. Just kidding. And then we stir. I give it about 20 stirs just until it feels cold enough to the touch. Now if you're feeling fancy you could top this with an expressed orange twist but these bitters do a really great job with the aromatics and I don't feel like having half peeled oranges in my fridge so this is how we usually have it. If you want it sweeter add some more sugar. This has been a go to for us in our house. Let me know if you try it, what you think. And also, if you want more unfussy recipes that you can make at home, drop a comment, follow, share, etc. You know how it works. Anyway, I've been talking too long and drinking not long enough so cheers. Bye.
