Do you really want what you say you want? There's a Chinese idiom called yè gōng hào lóng, Lord Ye loves dragons. And Lord Ye really did. He carved them into everything. Roof beams, he painted them onto his walls, he put them onto his cups, his wine jars, his robes. Literally everyone in the kingdom knew him as the man who loved dragons more than anyone else alive. Now up in the heavens, a real dragon heard about this, and frankly, it was touched. There was a real human who truly understood and appreciated dragons. So it flew down to pay him a visit. It poked its head through the walls, slid its tail through the hallways, and looked at Lord Ye, ready to meet its biggest fan. And Lord Ye went white as paper and screamed and ran for his life. Because it turns out, Lord Ye never really loved dragons. He just loved things that looked like dragons. Yè gōng hào lóng, loving the idea but then running away from the real thing. It's the person who loves honest feedback and then gets really defensive when they actually receive some. Or the person who loves an adventure but then balks at the idea of actually having to plan the trip. So the next time someone tells you they love to receive or to do something, ask yourself, 他们是不是叶公好龙? This is day, I can't believe it, 99 of learning Chinese and its idioms.
