An 18-year-old woman in the United States took her own parents to court to demand financial support after leaving the family home. Rachel Cannon claims she suffered verbal abuse and that her parents had practically forced her to leave. In the lawsuit, she sought weekly payments to cover school, college, and legal fees, arguing that despite being an adult, she remained financially dependent on them. Her parents offered a very different account, stating that Rachel had left of her own accord and that the conflict stemmed from her boyfriend, a relationship they disapproved of. According to reports, her mother had given her an ultimatum: break up with him or leave the house upon turning 18. The parents also alleged that the young woman would come home in the early hours of the morning, drink alcohol, and had once been brought home intoxicated by a friend's father. Furthermore, she was facing academic difficulties and had lost her position as cheerleading team captain. During the hearing, the judge listened to a voicemail in which Rachel spoke aggressively to her mother, although he also acknowledged that the parents had used inappropriate language. Ultimately, the judge denied the request for financial support, concerned about the precedent such a case might set.
