People outside of Italy have no idea what is actually happening to young people inside Italian schools every single day. The buildings are total filth and falling apart. Half our schools feel like abandoned prisons. There is never any toilet paper in the bathrooms, zero soap to wash your hands, no mirrors, and half the doors don't even lock or close properly. In the summer, we sit in thirty five degree classrooms with no air conditioning and no fans. In the winter, we have to do full six hour school days wearing our heavy winter coats because the heaters haven't worked in years. We sit on broken wooden chairs that rip your clothes, desks covered in rust, and ceiling tiles that look like they're about to fall on your head. You literally have to bring your own tissues from home just to use the restroom. Many students go to school Monday through Saturday. Teachers will publicly humiliate you in front of everyone during oral exams, hand out unfair failing grades, and nobody can stop them. They push us until we hit total burnout, and if you complain, they tell you "that's life." Anxiety, panic attacks, and depression among students are huge. When a student loses their life over school stress, the administration does a fake one minute silence and then goes right back to business as usual. Their only answer is banning phones. Instead of fixing broken heaters, providing soap, or fixing crumbling walls, the government's biggest solution was just banning smartphones. They treat us like animals and expect us to sit quiet in total filth, but then they get shocked when young people lose all hope for the future.
