Saint-Denis Mayor Bally Bagayoko was hit with tear gas after stepping in front of officers during a student demonstration in Paris and urging them not to charge. Bagayoko said many of the young protesters had not behaved aggressively and explained why he chose to intervene: 'The high school children who were in the street could be my children ... it is my responsibility to be at their side.'
