For 27 years, a daughter named Deanna Dikeman photographed her parents in Sioux City, Iowa, after every single visit. Starting in 1991, she hated the feeling of saying goodbye and pulling out of the driveway, so she rolled down her car window and used her camera to cover her sadness. For years, her mom and dad, Pat and John, stood side by side in the driveway smiling and waving together through every season. Then in 2009, her father passed away, and for the first time, her mother stood in the driveway waving goodbye all alone. Even though it broke her heart to see her daughter leave, her mom still came outside to wave every single time. Over the years, each photo showed more sadness in her mother's eyes before she turned around to walk back into a quiet, empty house. When her mother passed away in 2017, Deanna took one final photo of the empty driveway—where after 27 years, no one was left to wave goodbye.
