Singaporeans, imagine this: you're shopping at Mustafa Centre, minding your own business, but someone standing beside you could be trying to steal your bank card information without even touching your wallet. Sounds unbelievable, right? But this is exactly what a man has been accused of doing in Singapore. On 18 October, a 42-year-old Chinese national was allegedly moving around Mustafa Centre with a suspicious device hidden inside his bag. According to the police, he was standing unusually close to the shoppers and positioning his bag near the pockets. Why? The device reportedly used something called NFC technology, the same technology used for contactless card payments. Fortunately, alert security officers noticed his suspicious behaviour, detained him and handed over to the police. Officers seized an electronic device, two power banks, a mobile phone and several bank cards. The man was charged on 20th October. If convicted, he could face up to 3 years in jail, a 10,000 dollar fine or even both. Now here is something important. Just because someone can read certain card information using NFC, doesn't automatically mean they can withdraw your money or make successful transaction. But this incident is still a serious reminder about protecting your personal information. Keep your wallet secure, consider using RFID blocking wallet, enable bank transaction notification and regularly check your bank statements. And credit where it is due, well done to the Mustafa Centre security officers for staying alert. My question to you, should Singaporeans be more concerned about this type of contactless card crime?
