A terrifying moment on the football field involving Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell. The cervical spinal cord carries signals from the brain to both the arms and legs. When this area sustains a significant injury, it can disrupt those signals, potentially causing weakness or paralysis in all four extremities. There are TWO important concepts I want you to understand: Spinal shock: Following an acute spinal cord injury, there can be a temporary loss of motor function, sensation, and reflexes below the level of injury. This can occur with serious spinal cord trauma, and the initial examination doesn’t always tell us how much function may recover. Transient spinal cord dysfunction (spinal cord concussion): A traumatic impact can temporarily disrupt spinal cord function, causing dramatic neurological symptoms that may resolve over minutes to days without permanent neurological deficits. The challenge? These conditions can look very similar immediately after an injury. That’s why immobilization, a detailed neurological examination, and appropriate imaging are so important. Praying for Jack Campbell and hoping for a full recovery. 🙏 Small clarification: An earlier version of this video inadvertently included footage of another player. I’ve corrected that in this updated breakdown. #JackCampbell #DetroitLions #SpinalCordInjury #Neurosurgery #NFL
