So the Parker Solar Probe has touched the sun for the first time. Here's what we learned. So first off, the sun has no official surface, it's essentially atmosphere bound to the sun by gravity and magnetic forces. And interestingly, as the sun expands outward, it actually gets hotter and hotter. Then there's the point where the atmosphere escapes into space and creates solar wind. And this point where it exits is what they're calling the boundary layer or the surface of the sun. Technically, they're calling it the alpha and critical surface and understanding this will help us understand why it's hotter on the outside. So what happened recently and made the news is that the Parker Solar Probe crossed this boundary and just sent back its data. These were the images generated. And it turns out while the probe was going through this point, it crossed in and out of the surface three times. So this means that the atmosphere of the sun is actually kind of wrinkly or warped and not smooth. It looks like this layer changes as the sun's corona expands and contracts. Anyways, NASA is planning to go further and further into this atmosphere to learn more. And it's pretty incredible that we have the technology to do this.
