post mortem: failed open source startup launch I just quit my 270,000 dollar job at Coinbase to join the first YCombinator fall batch with my cofounder @not_nang. We're building PearAI, an open source AI code editor. Think a better Copilot, or open source Cursor. But you've heard this spiel already... this startup is getting dragged through the mud and broken glass on day one after they launched their product. their product is PearAI which is an open source competitor to Cursor. but they made every mistake possible to make the open source community so mad at them. the launch post immediately got a community note pointing out that PearAI is a fork of Continue.dev, which is another open source AI code editor. while forking open source projects to create your own variation, the product is how open source works. it's a little distasteful to not make that many changes and then literally raise VC. but of course it gets worse. the open source community is nosy so someone dug up one of their early PRs for the PR is literally just mass replacing continued a pair just to rename the product. the PR description: "it's ours now" but it still gets even worse. someone pointed out some flaws about their legal and the cofounder responded "dog I chat GPT the license, anyone is free to use our app for free for whatever they want. if there's a problem with the license just lmk I'll change it, we busy building right now can't be bothered with legal." the cofounders are really young and I get that people make mistakes, but I just wanna say this is probably the worst way to launch your product.
