You can do a lot on the free version of Chat GPT. But for me, there are a couple of very clear benefits when you choose to upgrade to their Plus account, which costs $20 a month. It's a really high-level summary of what is involved in both the free tier and the paid for. So the plus tier of ChatGPT can also upgrade to Pro, which is $200 a month. But right now I just don't think that's necessary. So in the free version of Chat GPT, you're going to get access to the model GPT 3.5. This model is good, but it's just not as good as having access to GPT 4. Think of these models in the same way you would compare cars. For example, this model is fine. It's going to get you from A to B. It's reasonably entry level. It's got a smaller engine, its answers just aren't going to be quite as good and it might require a bit more prompting and back and forth until you get an answer that you would like it to give to you. This version O1 is known for already having a little bit more critical thinking. It will look at your prompt and then look at its initial answer that it was planning to give you for that response thing. Am I actually answering the question the user is asking me here? On the free version, you will also have intermittent access to the internet. As far as I can tell, this is geography dependent when I tested out searching capabilities on the free version a few hours ago, it worked fine. And then just a couple of minutes ago, there was no access to the internet at all on my free account. There are also usage limitations, which means during peak times, you may find that ChatGPT is down or you can't get response to your prompt until the next day. You don't have this problem at all on the Plus account. You will consistently have fast response times and you will also have consistent internet browser. For me, that is a major upside to having the Plus account because it means you can conduct research effectively. You can ask ChatGPT to pull from relevant recent sources. And the final big difference between the free version of Chat GPT and the paid version at the moment, from me, this is what makes upgrading 100% worth it is that in the Plus account, you can create and use custom GPTs. You can't do that in the free version. The way to think of custom GPTs is to think about many AI assistants that have been trained in one really specific task. For example, I've got a custom GPT that helps me write my weekly newsletter. I've got another one that helps me draft email responses and I've even got another one that helps me create social media content. No understatement when I say that since the launch of custom GPTs, my productivity and my output capability is tenfold.
