Investment Banking Interview Prep
Their other posts in the index, biggest breakout first.
Here's another question I guarantee you'll have in all of your investment banking interviews and it's crucial we get this one right. I find that a lot of candidates end up getting this one wrong and here's why... they focus on telling the interviewer why exactly they want to pursue a career in investment banking instead of understanding their question. What they're really asking is, “do you actually get what investment banking is?” and “why does this job make sense for you specifically?” And there are 3 keys to answering this question correctly. I'm gonna walk through all of them individually and at the end of this video I'm gonna give you guys a word by word script on how to answer this in your own interviews. The 3 keys to answer this question are: No. 1 you actually understand what investment banking is. No. 2 you know what skills the job requires. We're talking modeling, valuation, client interaction etc. No. 3 you have a personal reason for why it fits you over the hundreds of other candidates they're interviewing, your interest strengths or experiences align perfectly for this role. Now look, investment banking is about advising companies on big, high stakes financial decisions. You are the sell-side banker, meaning you are in a client-focused role. Don't forget that. You serve the client by helping them enact M&A transactions, raise capital or restructure their businesses. Your team makes BILLIONS in fees annually to guide these firms through complex transactions they otherwise would not be able to do on their own. This industry is fast paced, high pressure and extremely technical. It's your job to show the interviewer you are the perfect fit for this type of role. So here's a word by word script on how to answer this question in your investment banking interviews. You start with saying this: “I know that in investment banking, we're going to be advising companies in the most significant milestones in their life cycles. These are high stakes transactions where clients need the best of the best to help them enact these moves strategically and effectively. I understand the work environment is fast paced, team oriented and requires precision with financial modeling skills. This is an environment that I believe suits my skill set perfectly and is one where I will thrive as a professional. Then you wanna give examples of relevant experiences that align with the role. So for example: “I spent time as an investment analyst for my university student managed fund where I thoroughly enjoyed doing a deep analysis of businesses with my teammates and becoming an industry expert along the way. I took pride in putting together sharp DCF models to help guide my team's investment making decisions based on diligent valuation processes. What I enjoyed most about these experiences was working with other like-minded talented individuals who shared a common goal of putting out the most high quality work to help reach our organization's ultimate goals. You can then throw in there something firm specific to tailor to that specific role. For instance: “I know Morgan Stanley is a global leader in M&A deal volume with X billion in deals done year to date. You can then round out your answer by saying something like this: “I believe the skill set I embody will translate perfectly to the industry and that's why I'm looking to pursue an investment banking role at your firm. This script should help you go in there and kill this question that I guarantee you'll be seeing during your investment banking interviews.
