10 things I would NEVER do as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst As an ex-banker 10) Fail the corporate "happy hour test". Banks will actually host summer happy hours solely to test intern behavior. As an intern, your goal is to show face, be social, and make a good impression. 9) Not being the first one to show up. You don't need to be last one out as an intern. But an empty desk first thing in the morning is a bad look. 8) Wear obscure patterns or designer clothing in general. Intern attire is simple - Don't stand out. Shirts: Charles Tyrwhitt, Calvin Klein, Banana Republic. Shoes: Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Cole Haan. 7) Make simple formatting mistakes. They expect logic mistakes to happen. Forgetting a period, footnote, or comma is sloppy and noticeable. 6) NOT SAVING UP YOUR MODELS Quickest way to lose hours of work, and slow down your team. F12 to "Save As" v1, v2, v3, etc. 5) Not leveraging your QAT in ppt and excel. Saves you hours of time as a banker. (which means more sleep) Add commonly used commands like: "align", "distribute", "group", "font color", "borders" 4) Neglecting your health. You are going to be sitting more than you ever have in your entire life. You will need to take things like exercise, diet, and sleep much more seriously. 3) Abusing firm perks... Easiest way to get fired btw. When banks look to cut costs, letting go of an analyst with cause is top of that list. Using the meal stipend to buy personal groceries. Expensing a uber to a bar/restaurant instead of home. Happens WAY more often than you think and it never ends well 2) Biting off more than you can chew. They want interns to be proactive. But taking on too much will just end up slowing down the team. Be honest about your capacity, and prioritize correctness over speed at first. 1) partaking in workplace gossip. 🗣️💨 It's 100% going to happen around you. Someone talking poorly about an MD or complaining about work. There is literally no benefit to chirping in as an intern. Just keep a neutral stance. Let me know which one was the most helpful.
