We've all heard the word diplomacy, diplomat, but what does that actually mean? My understanding of diplomacy is the art of addressing relevant issues that are sometimes but not always charged in a manner that prioritises cooperation. Someone else said it as the art of advancing an idea or cause without unnecessarily inflaming passions or unleashing a catastrophe. Merriam-Webster defines diplomacy as the skill of handling affairs without arousing hostility. Nonetheless, at the heart of diplomacy is collaboration with the purpose of working towards a goal. Whether that goal is shared by all parties involved is a whole different situation, but diplomacy involves thoughtful action and is intentional by nature. Diplomacy is most commonly discussed in the context of nation-states, treaties, negotiations. However, I believe that diplomacy occurs in whatever profession or field that you find yourself in. Striving to work collaboratively towards a goal is transferable across many different contexts and as a result, I believe diplomacy is as well.
