Our son's net worth at 3 months is $2,607. That's because we've done these two things to help him get started. As soon as we found out my wife was pregnant, we opened up a 529 plan and started contributing $100 per month into that plan. Which means that we've contributed $1,200 so far, plus an additional $500 the day that he was born. And that account has also gained $170 in interest for a grand total of $1,870. Doing all this will mean that by the time that he turns 18, he will have $71,000 that he can use for college tax-free. But every year on his birthday, we're going to put another $1,000 into that account, which means that by the time he turns 18, that'll actually be $116,000. Now, the second thing that we did on the day he was born was we opened a taxable brokerage account. You have to wait until your kid has a social security number to open one of these accounts. The day that we opened it up, we immediately put $500 into this account. We've been contributing $75 per month. And this account has gained $12 in interest, nothing to write home about, but you know, it's something. For a grand total of $737. If we continue to do this, when he turns 18, he'll have about $50,000 in this account. But at 18, we're no longer going to be contributing that $100 a month to the 529 plan. Instead, we'll allocate that money to putting it towards his brokerage account. Assuming that he doesn't touch this at the age of 25, he will have $118,000, which he can use to buy his first home.
