I'm documenting this process and I just got off a call with one of my clients. She told me that she owed $19,000 to CRA. Originally 23,000, she gave them $4,000, so now her expectation was she owed $19,000. I logged into her CRA account with her and it said $26,000 is still left owing. She got reassessed. She doesn't know why she got reassessed, and now the amount owing is $6,000 more than she expected. Her first reaction was my husband's going to kill me. Why? She felt so hopeless that she didn't know what was going on. You have two options as a business owner, solopreneur, someone that you have to remit your taxes to CRA. You have to understand what's going on. And I can spend all the time educating everyone on how everything works. What you got to do on a regular basis is very simple. Log on to CRA, check the mail and the amount owing once a month. That's it. Don't rely on your account, do it yourself. When a mail comes in and you get notified, set up that automatic notification and just check it. Just stay on top of it. Because she's now paying thousands of dollars of interest because that bill is not paid. And now the interest to CRA is a lot higher where she could maybe get a small loan or find another avenue to pay off that CRA debt, rather than just keep on letting it accumulate and not address the problem. If you stay on top of it, at least you're aware. The fact that she wasn't aware gave her a lot of anxiety. I brought that to her attention and she feels relieved just knowing what's going on. So just check your CRA account, see the amount owing, make sure you stay on top of it, and if there's any reassessments or unknowing of stuff, ask your account.
