I’ve been coding for over 6 years. If you want to become an AI Engineer, start building these 7 habits before it’s too late: 1. Read real AI engineering books (LLM Engineer’s Handbook, Chip Huyen, Building Agentic AI) 2. Master SQL + databases (Postgres, pgvector, indexing, query optimization, data modeling) 3. Build projects with production tooling (LangGraph, LiteLLM, LangFuse, PGVector, Docker) 4. Study how LLM systems actually work (RAG, embeddings, reranking, evals, context engineering) 5. Read AI research weekly (arXiv, HuggingFace papers, Sebastian Raschka breakdowns) 6. Learn deployment + observability (Vercel, AWS, OpenTelemetry, Grafana, LangSmith) 7. Ship projects publicly (GitHub, LinkedIn, technical breakdowns, architecture diagrams) Most people are learning “AI” by copying tutorials. The people getting hired are learning how to build reliable systems that actually work in production. Check the link in my bio for the resources to start learning AI engineering today.
