You may have heard the US government ordered Anthropic to shut down their latest model because it's too powerful. I want to tell you what actually happened and then explain why it ruined my weekend plans. On June 9th, Anthropic released Fable 5. I made another video about that a few days ago, but in short, it's by far the most powerful model ever released from any company. In fact, Anthropic decided it was too powerful to release until they added some safeguards to it. Well, on June 9th, we all got access to the safeguarded version, but three days later on June 12th, the United States Department of Commerce sent an order to Anthropic. Apparently Amazon had tipped off the government because people had been able to jailbreak Fable 5. But that order didn't shut down Fable 5. It says that they have to restrict access from any foreign national, including those within the country, and even foreign national employees of Anthropic. Now, of course, Anthropic has no way to verify the citizenship of all of its users, so it was forced to shut it down completely. Now, Anthropic is furious, and I think rightfully so. They reviewed these specific jailbreak cases and noticed that what the users were able to accomplish with Fable 5 could be accomplished with many other publicly available models. And also, if you've been following the public backlash since Fable 5 was released, you know that essentially all the criticism against Anthropic is that these safeguards were unnecessary. People have mostly agreed that Anthropic was being too strict. As you might also know, the United States government and Anthropic have been feuding for a couple months now, and that whole feud started because the Department of Defense was mad that Anthropic would not let them for killer robots or mass surveillance. So I think understandably, some people are speculating that the US government might just be trying to punish Anthropic right now. But the real story here is that this completely ruined my weekend plans. Like many of you, I was planning on spending the whole weekend using Fable to build some cool projects while we still have access to it through the Claude subscription. Personally, me and my brother were planning on connecting Claude to the Higgsfield MCP and using Fable 5 to create video games. But now of course, I'm stuck using Opus 4.8 to create my Google Ads Manager simulator, which I suspect will not win Game of the Year. But let me know if you're interested in testing it out when I'm done. I just hope the US government knows the kind of important work they're preventing right now.
