The U.S. Government just forced Anthropic to shut down Fable 5 and Mythos 5 only three days after release. So what happened? Well, the US government sent Anthropic a legal order that basically said, anyone that isn't a U.S. citizen is not allowed to use these two models. Doesn't matter if you live in another country and work in the US. If you're not a citizen, your access is cut. And since Anthropic has no way to check who's a citizen and who's not when they have millions of customers, they just had to turn it off for everybody. Now, why did the government ask for this? Apparently, another company went to the government and said, hey, we figured out how to make this model ignore some of the safety rules. This is what a jailbreak is. And the government saw that as a security risk. But Anthropic did not just launch this model and hope for the best. According to Anthropic, they spent thousands of hours testing of safety before to the public. They said the safeguards on Fable were actually so strict were publicly complaining that it is too lockdown. It was blocking basic biology homework questions. Cybersecurity researchers said they couldn't even do legitimate security work with it. And on top of that, they built what's called a Defence in depth strategy. Basically, layers of protection designed to make either very narrow or very expensive and after that will pull the plug from a verbal notice. Anthropic is saying. We looked at what this jailbreak was and it was minor. The information that it gave was stuff that you could already get as well. We are complying with the government's legal directive and are removing access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users. However, we disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of thousands of people. If this standard was applied across the industry, we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers. Then none of the other could be launching what they are either. I already see that my access has been removed, and by the time you see this, it probably will be too. I was just getting into exploring what people can do. So I guess it was fun while it lasted.
