Frogs have been on this planet for 250 million years. They even survived the asteroid that killed dinosaurs. But right now, they are disappearing faster than any other animal on Earth. Which is sad and also a very big warning. Hi, I am Jose from Mexico. Frogs aren't just animals, they are living their skin is so thin and permeable, it absorbs everything around them like water, air, chemicals, and toxins. They can't hide from a polluted environment. So when something goes wrong in where they live, frogs feel it. Science actually has a name for this: a bioindicator. An organism so sensitive to its surroundings that its health tells you the health of everything right now. More than 40% of all amphibian species in the world are threatened with extinction, at up to 25,000 times the natural rate. The frog warning system is telling us that our planet is in crisis. And when people listen to that alarm, good things happen. For example, in Costa Rica, local communities have built an entire ecological corridor to protect the last wild population of the lemur leaf frog and are restoring 30 wetland sites to bring it back. When we protect their habitat, frogs recover and when frogs recover, so does everything else around them. Follow the Rainforest Alliance to learn more about what other bioindicators are telling us.
