Maker you should meet. This week's maker you should meet is France based fiber artist Sandrine Torredemer. Also known as La Filature. She crafts breathtaking vignettes depicting everyday life with a special focus on the seaside during the summer holidays. Where she says everything seems suspended and a little lighter. Her work retains a focus on city structures and architecture, stemming from her former career in urban planning. She doesn't buy new materials, but instead works on threadbare sheets her family has patched and repatched for generations. She uses old canvas threads, scraps from secondhand clothing, bits of nothing. She gleans and gives a second life too. Her rule is to buy almost nothing and throw nothing away. Her pieces are intentionally small. She says that when you're overwhelmed by events and emotions, working small gives you a framework. When her life got hectic and tormented, embroidery stopped being a hobby and became almost a necessity, which might be the most honest depiction of why it is so critical to spend time making things by hand right now.
