How many of you remember 2Go? If you were born in the early 2000s you might not know about this app you the story 2Go was an instant that existed long before WhatsApp At one point 2Go became so popular that hit over 12 million I2M users in Nigeria alone while Facebook was around six in the country Across Africa 2Go reportedly had over 20 million and in Nigeria it became a movement People were buying 2Go credit joining chat rooms meeting strangers building friendship starting relationship and leaving their account on a way all night just to increase their star level If you know you know the app that felt like the future disappeared the future disappeared and many people don't remember it properly So the question 2go WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? to 2Go? How did an African social networking giant rise so fast and fall so quietly? Listen carefully because you will learn a lot from this This is a $1 million advice 2Go started in South Africa by two university students Alan Woolf and Ashley Peter studying at the University of in Johannesburg At first 2Go was not created media platform It was created as a simple mobile tool for students Back then many students basic school things like lecture lecture times checking results and knowing where to go next So Alan and Ashley used their knowledge of computer science to build a basic mobile site that their school them it with few friends time their friends found it useful But then Alan saw something bigger the platform more than just a school timetable It could become something students day And what do young people love doing Chatting At that time SMS was expensive For many students text message could consume airtime something powerful free chatting and that was a as a small university project during holidays slowly became bigger than expected Then in 2007 2Go officially On the first day 100 user from the university alone week over 1,000 users and within two the app had started spreading beyond Johannesburg they realized happening This was no longer a school project This was becoming a real business At that point Alan and Ashley their focus from school to 2Go They were seeing some money and like every startup investors started showing interest But instead of external funds they stayed lean very little They kept the team small their time energy and profit back into the product lesson STAY LEAN, INVEST IN PRODUCT of the first lesson Sometimes the a great business BUSINESS glamorous It looks small it looks rough it look like long nights and obsession But the most important lesson is problem IT ALL STARTED BY SOLVING A PROBLEM by solving a problem So my question for you is look around you What problem is there that you need to solve? As the company grew they realized something important They were technically strong but they needed business structure And this is where get stuck today They have talent they have ideas they have a product but they don't have structure That is why when people book a me I don't just look selling I look at the structure behind it the audience the positioning the timing the customer and the exact weakness that from growing Because sometimes PROBLEM THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE BUSINESS IDEA not the business structure carries the id 2Go brought in in Peter Lockhart as a business manager and that decision helped open new Through small advertising with East African bloggers 2Go started gaining momentum in Kenya And because SMS was expensive in Kenya at that 2Go became attractive chat cheaper connect faster and socialize online without much money Then Kenya its SMS pricing model Text messages became cheaper and suddenly in Kenya became weaker slowing down and that was a problem were trying to to do next something unexpected happened 2Go exploded in Nigeria and that changed everything Nigeria was the perfect market was huge feature phones were everywhere data was expensive young people wanted to connect and 2Go gave them they wanted: cheap communication chat rooms friend status update fun and attention 2Go spread in heavy marketing People invited their friend friends invited and before long to be on 2Go If you were not on 2Go back then you are not really Status It became a status a social identity and a digital playground People joined 2Go credit people competed for star levels Some people even money to buy data [laughs] That was how addictive 2Go became And honestly 2Go was not just an app It became a culture For many young first experience of social media became dominant before TikTok became addictive 2Go had already captured attention And this is where the lesson begins 2Go became successful phone era using Nokia Samsung feature phones Sony Ericsson and other basic and 2Go was perfect for that world It was light it used little data it worked on basic and it was easy to use changed everything But then Android smartphones popular And when smartphones across Africa people's expectation They no longer rooms They wanted pictures videos groups voice notes media sharing better design and better experience And this is where WhatsApp understood the smartphone to share photos share videos create groups communicate and most importantly users were going 2Go adapt 2Go did not adapt fast enough Instead of completely rebuilding the for smartphones they carried too much of feature phone experience into the smartphone and that became a problem because what worked in one era can be outdated in another era Now listen carefully lesson This is one of LESSON YESTERDAY'S SUCCESS CAN DESTROY TOMORROW to learn from made you successful yesterday can that destroy 2Go won because feature phone users moved to smartphone 2Go did not evolve fast enough The moment people to WhatsApp the network effect began Social media platforms survive on community If your friends you stay on 2Go But if your friend moved to WhatsApp you follow them and that is how they also died Slowly people stopped 2Go The chats room became empty The excitement and before long like children's used to feel cool suddenly felt outdated This story is it's about adaptation and timing It's about adaptation It is about timing It is about customer behavior It is about understanding that the market never stop moving And many businesses are still making today This is a very important lesson to go Never become brand that worked Be loyal to the future because not care about nostalgia It only reward people who adapt At one point millions of African youth could not imagine life without 2Go That is how fast relevans disappear So whether you a business a career a personal brand or a platform never stop studying how people are changing because once your audience changes and you refuse to change you may still exist but emotionally left you behind So my final advice don't be like Now tell me what brand would talk about next? Let me know in and follow me so you see me again
