There's one thing I learned at Goldman that completely changed how I approach any meeting or negotiation. You should know the outcome before you ever walk in the room. And I mean actually know it. Like you're not hoping, you're not assuming, the information you're presenting should not surprise anybody. The meeting is just the formality. People think meetings are where decisions get made. They're not. The decision actually gets made in the hallway before it gets made in the pre-briefing that you've done with everybody. This works, whether you are pitching to a board, pitching to your cofounder, pitching to anybody. Do the work beforehand. You should know the vote before you ever call the meeting.
