DNA is an amazing molecule. I think everyone understands that it is to DNA that we owe the very fact of life’s existence. In essence, it is a small alphabet capable of storing gigabytes of information about how our organism is built, information about thousands of genes and billions of nucleotides. From the South African fly to the reindeer - almost all life on Earth is based on DNA (RNA viruses don’t count; they are quite strange in general). Thanks to its compactness and stability, DNA is stored in the cells of living organisms for decades, and in some cases even for thousands of years after the organism’s death. During life, it is constantly copied, checked, and repaired thanks to a complex system of enzymes and proteins. RNA is synthesized based on DNA, and this RNA is later read by the ribosome. The ribosome, in turn, uses this information to assemble proteins that perform a wide variety of functions in our bodies. #DNA #edit #Biology #Genetics #Biotech
