The third lesson came from my favorite niece. I took her and her brothers to go and buy ice cream. Feeling like the rich uncle, I told them to just go and pick whatever they want. She stopped and looked at me and said, Baba Ismaeel, how much can each of us spend? I was surprised and looked at her and said, what do you mean? She said, that's how our dad does. That's how our dad does. That answer shocked me because most children will have run and be packing whatever they want. And at that moment, I realized that their father was teaching them something that most adults are still struggling with. How to spend with limits and how to budget. Looking back, I realized my parents never sat me down and talked to me about money. But they taught me through small everyday experiences.
