My wife left me this morning. She woke up early, loaded everything up in the suburban like she'd been planning this for a while. She said she was heading out to the coast to visit her family and apparently, the long drive would give her some clarity. She took the kids with her, leaving me alone in a slightly messy house. Feeling unsure of what to do next, I did what seemed logical at the time. I cleaned. There's something weirdly comforting about having a tidy space when life throws you curveballs. Within about an hour, the house became spotless. But my mind got messier. Did I forget our anniversary? Was it the dishes that I left out overnight again? Perhaps she finally had enough of waiting for me to assemble that IKEA shelf from six months ago. Just as panic sets in, my phone buzzed. It was her. "We just got here. Your parents say hi." I know I've said it already, but I really wish you could have come. Let's plan a trip, just the two of us, after your birthday. I love you. Right. The beach trip with my parents. I have zero clue what trip she's talking about. But apparently, I was aware of this trip all along and clearly I've been smiling and nodding along without really listening.
