Free $1,000 for your child. Trump accounts launch July 4th. And there's up to $1,000 of free money on the table for your child, so listen closely. These are brand new investment accounts designed to give American children a financial stake in the US economy from an early age. Personally, I think this idea is fantastic. Any child under 18 with a Social Security number can open a Trump account. Children born between January 1st, 2025 and December 31st, 2028 will qualify for a one-time $1,000 deposit from the US government. But there's something a lot of parents don't realize. Michael and Susan Dell have committed 6.25 billion to provide $250 deposits for millions of children who were born before 2025 and therefore miss the government's $1,000 eligibility window. That contribution is for children age 10 and under who live in zip codes where the median household income is 150,000 or less. So this is not necessarily $1,250 for the same child. Most families will be looking at either the $1,000 government deposit or the $250 Dell contribution. And there's a zip code checker for this that I'll provide in a moment. The accounts will be administered through a partnership through the US Treasury, BNY Mellon, and Robinhood. The money is not just going to sit in cash. It will be invested in low-cost mutual funds or ETFs that track broad US stock market indexes. You will not be able to buy individual stocks or speculate on anything like crypto. But parents, relatives, friends, and even employers can contribute additional money with private contributions generally capped at $5,000 per year. Now this money cannot be withdrawn until the child turns 18. And after that, the account is treated like a traditional IRA, meaning taxes and potential early withdrawal penalties can apply. So I would not automatically assume this is the best place for every additional dollar you want to invest for your child. But when it comes to the free seed money, I would absolutely make sure you understand whether your child qualifies. You can check the eligibility details at trumpaccounts.guide and once enrollment happens, parents should be able to begin the process through trumpaccounts.gov. Because whether it's $250 or $1,000, this could be the first investment account millions of American children ever own. And the biggest story may not be the initial deposit. It's what happens when a child begins compounding money before they're even old enough to understand what investing is.
