Step inside Ukraine's Killhouse Academy drone school

This is the Killhouse Academy, a drone school run by Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps for Ukrainian soldiers as well as foreign volunteers. We've come to the Killhouse Academy and there are drones flying all around us, some are crashing as well. Students here are right at the end of a six-day basic drone flying course and they'll leave here with their certificate and many will take it straight to the front line where drones and drone flying skills are so desperately needed. That one just crashed. Over 7,000 people have passed through the academy's doors over the last two years. First they learn the basics of flying a drone on a simulator before moving on to quadcopters like this and to the more challenging obstacle course. We are trying to give them much control, so they can hover in front of targets, they can hover while their signal is breaking. So we are teaching them to fly slowly, because that means you can fly much longer distance, because your battery wouldn't discharge fast. Students also need to know how to handle explosives and hit human-sized targets too. This test is just with a small charge, but in the field FPV drones often have payloads of about one kilogram. Remotely operated attack drones, bomber drones and uncrewed ground vehicles are an integral part of Ukraine's fight against Russia, moving supplies, carrying out surveillance and destroying the enemy. Sante is a foreign volunteer fighter. He's been on the receiving end of drone attacks but is new to piloting. It's like driving a car: You need to learn properly, and you need to practice and practice and practice and practice. The unique experiences I have with drones are running in front of them, taking supplies from them, or hiding of them. For us, the logistics today can't be executed without drones, ground drones or flying ones. Without drones, you are dead. Drone pilots are also getting used to the idea of operating far away from the combat zone. There's really no difference. Today I'll show you a bunker we have, and from there you can operate a drone that's literally right outside the window. And you can also operate a drone that's, let's say, somewhere on the other side of the world.
