So I made a video about why software companies are becoming banks and I talked about Zelle in that video and somebody asked how does Zelle make money? As somebody who works in this industry, I wanted to explain it a little bit more for you. So Zelle is owned by a company that is owned by seven banks and Zelle is just one of the several products that that company builds and so they charge banks a fee for using their software and that's maybe why you bank at a tiny credit union and they don't offer Zelle. They just probably don't have the budget and it doesn't play out for their economics well. That aside, banks love Zelle and that's why Zelle makes money and they love Zelle because the money technically never leaves their account. You're probably like what do you mean it never leaves their account? Deposits are a very important asset for banks. They take the money that you put in and they lend it out to other people and they make interest off of that. Because of the payment rail that Zelle uses, the money goes from bank to bank which means that until you spend it or you cash it out, it's always available on that bank's balance sheet as money that they can then lend out to other people completing the cycle. It's a win for Zelle because they get a fee for selling their software. It's a win for the banks because their capital is relatively stable and it's a win for you and I because we don't get charged for sending money to each other. Hopefully this helps.
