If you're on your way to New Orleans or you're there right now, I want you to forget Bourbon Street for just one minute. That's where the tourists go. But trust me, I love it, but I got something else for you. Because if you're looking to support local businesses while also experiencing Black New Orleans, then you need to check out Bayou Road. Bayou Road is one of the city's oldest roads. And today, it's home to a thriving community of Black-owned businesses, restaurants, cafes, and cultural spaces. And here are three that you need to check out on your trip to New Orleans. Number one, the Community Book Center. This Black-owned bookstore is doing more than just selling books. Mama Jennifer and Mama Vera, as they told me to call them, are preserving our culture through stories, celebrating our voices through every product on their shelves and creating programs that bring people together. They also were one of the first community book partners at the Essence Festival in their book corner. So these sisters are the real deal, and you need to pull up and visit them.
