Let's talk about the stock market. So, yesterday was another headline heavy day, but the market held up relatively well given the circumstances, at least an aggregate. So, let's talk about it. The big story was and still is the Middle East after Iran attacked ships in the Strait of Formosa and the US struck back, Trump declared the ceasefire "over" and oil jumped 3.5%+. Energy and defense rose, airlines and crypto fell. The Dow slipped ~1%, the S&P dipped just 0.28%, and the Nasdaq actually rose just a bit as investors bought the chip dip. The big deal: Apple committed $30 billion+ to Broadcom through 2031 (AVGO +4.8%). And Nvidia has lost nearly 16% since May wiping out nearly a trillion dollars in value. even though it just posted one of the biggest quarters in chip history and it still controls a significant chunk of the AI chip market. So how does a company doing that well see its stock actually fall? It comes down to expectations and I break down that whole situation on the Bell Club today and in my newsletter. The Federal Reserve released the minutes from its last meeting yesterday and they showed officials sharply raised their inflation forecast for this year, now expecting inflation around 3.6% up from 2.7% just a few months ago and well above their 2% target. The committee looked pretty divided about what to do next, which slightly increased the odds of a rate increase in late July according to Wall Street. But overwhelmingly the belief is that rates will remain unchanged later this month when they meet. These were also the first minutes from a meeting under the new Fed Chair Kevin Wash who is running things very differently from his predecessor, quieter with fewer clues between meetings, something that I am also talking about on today's newsletter. A couple of stories, Alibaba jumped 11% yesterday. It's best day in almost a year after signaling its cloud and AI business is finally starting to pay off. Delta is now selling basic versions of its first class seats, same seat but stripping out perks like lounge access for a lower price. Penguin Solutions, a California-based company that builds infrastructure and services for AI data centers, served over 25% yesterday after crushing its earnings reports. This morning features are actually pointing slightly higher despite more overnight escalation in the Midwest. An oil has cooled slightly to around $73 barrel here in the US. So after all of that noise, we might actually see the day open in the green, we will see if that holds.
