For 80 years, Chanel & Dior have stood for two completely different visions of womanhood. And this week their designers hit the runway to show exactly where the two houses seem to be heading. Shout out to Balenciaga and Schiaparelli that also ate, but their rivalry started off of the runway. Chanel's Matthieu Blazy scored a massive win by designing Dua Lipa's custom wedding gown in June, but Dior's Jonathan Anderson also had a huge move of his own, breaking the internet by designing Taylor Swift's top secret wedding gown. It also handed Dior a fifteen million dollar media spike before the show, even walked on Monday. But really the showdown was in the clothes. Both designers are clearly trying to strip the old, stiff padding out of couture, but their approaches couldn't be more different. Blazy turned Chanel into a soft, illustrative fairy tale book, inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and Puss in Boots, after he discovered fairy tale books in Coco Chanel's apartment. He left tweed edges beautifully frayed and rough and hid secret embroidery to do list inside all of the jackets. Meanwhile, Anderson at Dior really tore up the rule book, partnered with sculptor Lynda Benglis to turn fabric into liquid metal, really breaking apart Dior's traditional structures with asymmetric razor sharp pleating. Dior may have captured the wedding of the century, but Chanel really got the final word on the runway. While traditionally couture shows end with a white bridal gown, Chanel did the complete opposite, right after the white dress, Blazy closed the show with a striking black revenge dress, a direct nod to Coco Chanel, who famously chose never to marry.
