Turns out the RAM is about to cost more than the good stuff. What's going on? What's going on? Ah shit, here we go again. RAM prices again. This is so, so dumb. Because we're talking DDR4 now. The cheap kind. That's the stuff you'll find inside of budget builds, older PCs, office computers. DDR4 prices could explode by 50% just when budget PC builders need it most. To jump more than 50%. In fact, some of it already costs more than the better RAM. That's right. The old stuff is pricier than the new stuff. And of course, it's AI again. Meta is using old DDR4 memory in DDR5-only AI servers to save on hardware costs. Each 'MemServer' integrates 1TB of total memory, pairing 768 GB of DDR5-6400 RAM with 256 GB of DDR4-2400. So they are buying that same old memory. So they are buying all of it. And the companies who make DDR4 have basically stopped, so they could, yeah, build AI chips. Yeah, build AI chips. The end of an era — DDR4 production to essentially end this year, Micron the final domino to fall. DDR4 chips are going to be even more expensive later this year. When you've got less supply, demand and the price shoots up. So, yeah. And you know what? It's hitting the people who can least afford it. We're talking budget gamers, the kid with a hand-me-down PC, or anybody that's just trying to add a cheap stick of RAM to their build. So the cheapest way to save an old PC or upgrade an old PC is now a luxury, that AI can have the scraps. At this point, I don't even know what to tell you. Take up woodworking. A table saw only robs you once, so... Yay!
