Apparently, Minecraft now needs double the RAM to run properly. Really? Now? Mid RAM crisis!? Yeah, that's right. For the first time in 17 years, Minecraft Java Edition is now asking for double the RAM. And the minimum and recommended system requirements were quietly updated recently, out the new minimum RAM needed on your little cousin's school laptop is now 8 gigabytes versus the previous four. And the recommended settings are an RTX 2060 graphics card. I'm old enough to remember when that graphics card people bought to play freaking Cyberpunk when it came out. Now, why did the recommendations change? The reason is a full engine transition. They're dumping OpenGL, which is the graphics technology that Minecraft ran on day one, in exchange for Vulkan. They basically said supporting aging hardware was limiting how much it could modernize. They want to shinier, more modern-er! Now that's great and everything, but the timing kind of sucks. They picked the most expensive moment of the decade to ask for more RAM. There are so many optimization mods out there like Sodium that millions of players already use. So if you're worried about this and you have a low-spec machine, I wouldn't be too worried. Where there's a crafting table, there's a way. Or whatever they say. Now I would be worried if you aren't following. I won't even ask you for more RAM. What a deal!
