I wish I knew what those five words really meant before I lost so many clients. The five words? “I’ll get back to you.” When I started my business, I thought those words were a good sign. I would smile, say “Okay,” and wait. One day. Two days. One week. Nothing. I kept telling myself they were just busy. But after seeing the same message from different clients over and over again, I realized something. Most of the time, “I’ll get back to you” is not the real problem. It’s the polite way clients end a conversation when they are not convinced enough to move forward. They might still have questions. They might not trust you yet. They might be comparing you with someone else. Or they simply don’t see enough value in what you’re offering. The mistake most business owners make is ending the conversation there. They wait. They hope. And eventually, they get ghosted. What I should have done was ask one simple follow up question before the conversation ended. Something like: “Before you go, is there anything that’s stopping you from making a decision today?” That single question gives the client a chance to tell you what’s really on their mind. And when you know the real objection, you have a chance to solve it. Many clients don’t disappear because your service is bad. They disappear because the conversation ended too early. I learned that lesson the hard way. Save this because the next time a client says, “I’ll get back to you,” you’ll know the conversation isn’t over yet.
