Can you spot the difference? 👀 It wasn't the speed, and it wasn't me just "flexing" my abs. The difference was making an intentional, conscious effort to brace my core before starting the movement and keeping that brace throughout the entire rep. I actually slow the movement down because I have to think about maintaining that tension. Quality always beats rushing through reps. Your core's primary job is to stabilize your spine. If you're just moving your arms and legs without creating that stability first, you're missing the purpose of the exercise. And that goes for compound movements as well, not just core work. The exercise didn't change. The execution did and that's what made all the difference. A cue for bracing/engaging your core correctly is to think about using your muscles to draw your belly button up into your rib cage as far as you can get it. You can do this while just sitting down... practice it & the next time you do literally any core move at all.. implement it & feel the difference.
