This is one of many upgrades I've been building to make conversations with him feel truly natural, I will be showing the other features in upcoming videos. For those curious about what's actually happening here, most voice assistants decide you're "done talking" using a silence timer , basically if you are quiet for X seconds, your turn is over. That timer is a lose-lose tradeoff. If you set it too short, it constantly interrupts people, because we humans pause mid-thought all the time ("so what I was thinking was… hmm…"). If you set it long to compensate… now the whole thing feels sluggish all the time. Even when you finish a sentence crisply, it just sits there, waiting out the clock before it'll answer. So you have to choose between snappy but rude, or polite but slow. A timer-based solution cannot be both. The upgrade is semantic turn detection, instead of just timing your silence, GPTARS now considers what you're saying. If you trail off a sentence unfinished, he is able to determine that it is an unfinished thought and waits patiently for you to finish (for the most part) A clearly complete sentence gets an answer almost instantly. The pauses are the same, but the responses are opposite because the words mean different things, so now he gets to be patient AND fast, which the timer never could. This is one of the hardest problems in voice AI. We humans are extremely good at this and intuitively predict when a sentence will end before it actually does. We really don't wait for silence at all, we are constantly reading the sentence's trajectory. Now getting AI, and in this case, an AI robot powered by a Raspberry Pi to do that needs an entirely different approach 90% of why talking to machines still feels like talking to… well…machines.#ai #robot #technology #interstellar #artificialintelligence
