Today I responded to a call for five puppies dumped in a cardboard box on the side of the road in 101-degree heat. (And before it’s asked, the people in the house did not own them). By the time I arrived, they had already climbed out of the box and were huddled together in the small patch of shade they could find. They were underweight, had areas of hair loss, and were absolutely covered in fleas and ticks. They were doing everything they could to survive after someone abandoned them. Abandonment isn’t just heartbreaking, it’s illegal. More importantly, it’s down right cruel. There are shelters. There are rescues. There are people willing to help. If you’re overwhelmed, ask. There are resources available. But leaving defenseless puppies to fend for themselves in triple-digit temperatures is never the answer. And I’m tired of the excuses to be frank. And while I’m on my soapbox… Fleas and ticks are everywhere right now because of this heat. If your pets aren’t on a flea and tick preventative, please make it a priority. Skip a few Starbucks runs or hold off on the unnecessary shopping trips if that’s what it takes. Preventing an infestation is far less expensive, and far less painful, than treating one. These parasites can cause severe skin infections, anemia, and transmit dangerous diseases. This is what preventable suffering looks like. Thankfully, these five babies are now safe and receiving the care they desperately needed. They are available to 501(c)(3) rescue organizations.
