Business valuation gets strange when the founder does not want to sell. John Paul DeJoria says a buyer asked what it would take to acquire Patrón, so he named a number he thought would end the conversation: more than $5 billion. They laughed because the largest comparable brand had sold for $2.2 billion. Bacardi later returned with a $5.1 billion valuation. The clip works because the “crazy” number becomes the final offer, but the deeper lesson is about leverage: he was not negotiating from desperation. He was already happy owning the company, so he could name the price that made leaving worthwhile. Would you name an almost impossible price, or refuse to sell at any number?
