Do you need to know a second language

Do you need to speak more than one language to work at the United Nations? My name is Neisha and I am an official UK government youth delegate to the United Nations. My role did not require me to speak more than one language. However, this is a major exception. I work with the UK Foreign Office, not the UN directly. And also because my role is advocacy based and also aimed at a younger age group. I didn't need to have a lot of traditional things like having my bachelor's degree already. And that is exactly how I worked with the UN at the age of 18. However, what I can say is yes, for most UN and diplomacy roles, it is really, really useful and sometimes required to speak more than one language. This is because the UN is an international space which has six official languages. And I completely understand that this can be very frustrating. I, for example, only grew up speaking English and so now that I've built up proficiency in French, I know that will really support me as I go up in this career. There are so many diplomacy and multilateral careers that aren't just for the United Nations. And what one you're going for will depend on whether or not you need to have a knowledge of another language. So, like most things, it is very dependent. But I would say that if you have the opportunity to learn a language, and you're really interested in diplomacy and international relations, then I would definitely recommend it.
