If you wanna know how to lose weight, ask a fat person. It's recently come to my attention that some of y'all don't know who I am. I got a comment on one of my what I eat in a day videos that I found you from your antiquing videos and I had no idea that you've had such a dramatic transformation. So, I allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Jenna, I'm freshly 28 years old and I've lost almost 180 pounds. I feel like a lot of people's story who have had a really significant amount of weight to lose. They are the type of people who have been big their whole life and that was just not the case for me. I was always really normal sized and it wasn't until high school that I started to gain a little bit of weight. Don't get me wrong, did I have a little bit of weight to lose? I guess probably. I was not fat by any means, but for example, I was like always the biggest girl on the cheer team, you know what I mean? I was a thick girl. My mom did put me on birth control the summer before I went into high school because she was not, you know what? I respect it. Growing up, I never really knew what like a normal menstrual cycle was because it was just always controlled by birth control. I do remember losing like 30 pounds this summer before my senior year of high school. I was really excited about that. I was probably like the size I am now. Getting ready for a wedding right now. Hair slicked back. It's gonna like 93 degrees and there's just literally no point in me styling my hair. So hopefully the makeup eats so my hair doesn't have to. I really started to gain the most weight when I was going into college. Obviously, there was not one reason for my weight gain. It was a plethora of reasons. I remember not that long after graduating high school, I decided that I wanted to get off birth control. Felt like maybe it was contributing to my weight. Thought maybe I didn't like how it made me feel and I just didn't wanna have to be taking it if I didn't have to, I just didn't wanna be on it. I didn't wanna be on it. After I stopped taking my birth control, my periods got super irregular and then eventually they went away. And I'm talking like, went away for literally almost a full year. As time went on, I gained more and more weight. Had such horrible, debilitating anxiety about going to the doctor about it. It's just turned into the whole PCOS. Talk that we all been given. I got diagnosed with PCOS, well. How do I get rid of it? They were like, lose weight. I haven't been trying that, honey. Became the whole vicious cycle of getting diagnosed with PCOS, trying all these different medications. Of course, I got put on the whole metformin train. Horrible. I just stopped going to the doctor about it because I was like, nothing I'm doing. Just thought I was meant to be fat. It's kind of the time that I was graduating with my associates, starting my nursing career in the pediatric ICU. I just had a lot of outside stressors that were just taking care of everybody else besides me. End of 2020. I tore my ACL and meniscus. I literally walked on a torn ACL for 9 months because I was so scared and I thought they were just gonna tell me that I needed physical therapy to help my knee pain because I was overweight. Oh, turns out my ACL looked like shredded chicken inside my knee. I got that fixed. It was a pretty catastrophic injury. I'm not gonna lie. Contributed to more inactivity. Don't really have many moments that I feel like should have been when I went to the doctor and they were like, you're gonna be permanently infertile if you don't lose weight. It's just kind of a culmination. I was sick and tired of feeling sick. I asked my PCP for a referral to our bariatric program. The day that I started my bariatric surgery program to the day I lost 70 pounds. That was a one year span. Implementing everything that I was learning in the program. Some insurance companies require you to lose weight before you get approved. Mine did not. They just said that you can't gain more than like five or 10 pounds. Wasn't worried about because I was already instilling those healthier habits. And a lot of people say why did you get surgery if you lost 70 pounds on your own? Well, baby, it was really good at losing weight. I lost weight 10, 15 other times in my life. It's keeping the weight off that I could never do. If you wanna know how to lose weight, ask a fat person. So I felt like I needed a more permanent solution. If I do take a glippi now. Why did I choose surgery over injections? Mostly because I got my surgery in 2023. Medications were around, they weren't as popular and it honestly just wasn't presented to me as an option. I came in there with the idea that I wanted bariatric. So that's what they talked to me about at those appointments. They did talk to me about how the gold standard for obesity management is often surgery in conjunction with medication. It's kind of like, a, we'll cross that bridge when it comes. If I had to start all over again tomorrow and if the opportunity surge, I would still choose surgery. Needed something that was gonna feel a little bit more permanent. I chose gastric bypass over gastric. And I could talk about that a little bit more in a different video. I'm like 10 or 15 pounds away from my goal weight. That is not my goal body composition. Last summer I was like, I was a little bit shredded. A lot of muscle on me. A lot of traumatic life events happened in that time just basically falling out of my routine, really having no control over my own life, not being able to move as much, taking comfort in food. Gained about 30 pounds back. Feel like a year and a half after my surgery, I did get put on Fen-Phen. Did help for a really long time when I first started. I felt like an insane maniac. And eventually you just kind of build a tolerance to it and it doesn't work anymore. That 30 pound regain when I finally felt like I was getting back into my routine. Went to my doctor and I said, something's gotta give. I'm not doing all the right things, but I also feel like I'm kind of like not in control. I know I've done them all along, but I just can't do them. So they decided to put me on a glippi. Very reluctant because I really know a lot of people. I don't judge them at all. I think I was kind of internally judging myself because I was like, Man, I've already had so much help with bariatric surgery. But that is my own internalized fatphobia coming out because it's not a cheat code, not a scapegoat. It's literally just part of my chronic obesity management. Honestly mad at myself for not going to my doctor. My 30 pound regain. I haven't weighed myself in a couple weeks actually just cause I've been moving and life's been real crazy. Know I'm down about half of that regain. And then I've kind of been stuck halfway and I've just been getting back into the routine of moving more. Feeling like myself again. I am in no rush to get that extra 15 pounds off. Really trying to focus on how I'm feeling mentally. I am somebody who struggles with my mental health. I'm on an SSRI, which also contributes to weight gain. We just focusing on how I'm feeling right now. Down almost 180 pounds is what I say. I hate saying I lost 70 pounds naturally and then 110 with surgery and then I gained 30 and now I'm down half of that regain with a glippi. So that's kind of a breakdown of my story. Let me know questions. I gotta go.
