He wasn't just standing there taking pictures. According to reports, when the bison suddenly charged, his 13-year-old grandson was in danger. In those few seconds, Carl reportedly moved in a way that drew the bison's attention to himself instead of his grandson. It gave the boy enough time to get out of the way. The bison then slammed into Carl and launched him nearly eight feet into the air. He landed hard, breaking his femur in four places. Considering a full-grown bison can weigh close to a ton and run over 30 miles per hour, the outcome could have been much worse. He was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery, and is now recovering. Through it all, he's said he's grateful his grandson wasn't the one who was hit.
