In March 2023... Experienced snowboarder Ian Steger was riding near Mt. Baker Ski Area. Without warning... He fell headfirst into a deep tree well—a hidden pocket of loose snow around the base of a tree. Buried beneath nearly 6 feet (1.8 meters) of snow... He couldn't free himself or reach his radio. As time passed... The risk of suffocation increased. Fortunately... Skier Francis Zuber noticed the tip of Ian's snowboard sticking out of the snow. He immediately began digging... And the dramatic rescue was captured on his helmet camera. Ian survived the ordeal, reminding winter sports enthusiasts that tree wells are among the most dangerous hidden hazards on ski slopes, especially in deep powder.
