In 1991, cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev launched into space as a citizen of the Soviet Union. He expected to spend only a few months in orbit. But while he was aboard the Mir space station, the Soviet Union collapsed. On Earth, borders changed, governments disappeared, and a superpower ceased to exist. Krikalev remained in orbit for months longer than originally planned, as the political and financial situation complicated his return. When he finally landed in March 1992, he wasn't returning to the country he had left. The Soviet Union was gone.
